What is Organic anyway?
The concept of organic food is simple: If it's produced without the
aid of chemical pesticides and only processed with natural additives,
it's organic (The Natural
Resource Defence Council).
99% of the ingredients we use at The Bread Company Montclair are certified
organic. This includes the flours, grains and seeds, dried fruit and
maple syrup, the rice milk the soy milk, the fresh vegetables and cheese,
the organic drinks, sodas, coffee and tea and the fresh vegetables and
more!
These organic ingredients are all grown without the use of artificial,
man made chemicals, synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. They are grown
on farms that have strict Organic Regulations placed upon them, the
soils and products are tested regularly to ensure compliance.
Organic Certification requires rigorous and dedicated effort, but results
in a product free of chemical and biological contamination. Products
like these!
Why Organic?
We wouldn't do it if we didn't HAVE to. The unfortunate thing is that
the majority of food products ARE made with a whole host of tainted
ingredients.........we don't want that for our customers.
The concept of organic food is simple: If it's produced without
the aid of chemical pesticides and only processed with natural additives,
it's organic food. Included in the phrase "only natural additives"
are the rules, that Organic food:
- Must be derived from organisms that have not
been genetically engineered. For instance, maize plants genetically
engineered to resist the European corn borer could not be used to
produce organic corn.
- Must be grown without the use of the following:
- Living organisms that have been genetically
engineered. For instance, Bt toxin, an insecticide could not be
used if it is produced using genetically engineered bacterial
strains.
- Non living products derived in whole or part
from genetically engineered organisms. For instance, a hormone such
as rBGH (recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone), which is produced in
genetically engineered bacteria, could not be used in producing
organic milk.
- They shall be processed without additives
or processing agents that are genetically engineered, and shall
not be derived through processes involving genetically engineered
organisms. For instance, organic cheese could not be produced using
genetically engineered enzymes, such as chymosin.
- Organic food shall be grown or produced by
methods that prevent the transfer by natural means (such as cross
pollination) of genetically engineered DNA or genes to the plants
or animals under production.
- They shall be processed, transported, and
stored in a way that prevents contamination by genetically engineered
materials.
- They shall be analyzed at appropriate points
during production, processing, and transport to ensure contamination
has not taken place.
